What a difference 24 hours can make. Just yesterday afternoon I was searching through job ads at about one per second and feeling alienated from the working world. A phone call... an invite to a school BBQ/end-of-school-year ultimate game... an informal interview turned into a formal interview... an invite to meet the other three high school teachers... two hours visiting with three people that love their jobs... ... ... BLAM, the job is mine. I'm now a high school math teacher at Compass Montessori School in Golden, CO.

The high school has around 90 students grades 10-12. Before lunch I'll guide the students through the exciting world of math (mostly algebra and IMP work). For lunch I'll eat a meal cooked by the students. After lunch I'll teach an elective course and have advising and administration duties (the teachers do pretty much everything that the students don't do). Possibile electives are astronomy, journalism (yearbook and newsletter), photography, ultimate (about 1/3 of the high school plays ultimate, and they get school credit for it!), video production, or logic/boardgame strategy (I'm serious).

And best of all... the kids and other teachers are great. It's an extremely fun and laid back environment and the kids love their school.

Now if I can just remember how to add.

If you could rename this thread "Daniel Goes to School," that would be great.

whew, that's an exciting little 24 hours. if only everything could be that easy...maybe it's your devastingly good looks, charming social skills, and mad speed in ultimate! anyway, congratulations, kid. let me know how the transition from going to school into teaching school goes.

cheers,
rachel d.

Since it's a montessori school I don't have to "teach" them, I just have to occasionaly prod them with a stick.

daniel, that's awesome. and the kids cook you lunch? that's different. anyway, sounds like a great job, and it's nice to be reminded there are montessori schools out there for those of us who dropped our math majors but still might like to teach.
also, you should see what they've done with your house now. it's barely recognizable. they cleared the entire yard, replaced the columns with rock ones, and added shutters. oh, and a stained-glass window in the octagon.
it was better before.
again, congrats!! keep us posted once school starts on how the teaching (prodding) goes.
