We will bestowing the following 2010 Winter League Award categories at the end of the year:
MVP
Best New Player/Rookie
Hardest to Guard
Best Defender
Best Thrower
Best Receiver
Most Spirited Player
Most Spirited Team
Sexiest Butt
Cutest Dog

To my recollection, award voting is kind of last minute and largely based on tourney play or teammate recommendations. I started this thread so players could point out/call out potential award winners prior to tourney day.

When you're playing Brandon's team watch Ross Patton for Best Rookie. He makes good, intelligent throws and cuts and hardly ever turns the disc. Also, my dog Frankie is really cute.

When can we start voting on a different part of the anatomy? Like calves for example...

can we vote for "Best Behaved Dog" instead of cutest?
looks only go so far.

Elvin, I'd support your request for other anatomy or accessories ~ most awesome pants, best beard, wonderful headgear, biggest earrings ???

The number of awards should be cut. Does everyone not remember how ridiculously long it takes to tally and hand out the awards?

Male MVP
Female MVP
Most Spirited Team
Best Rookie

The rest is fluff. Less=More

This coming from the 2004 WL Best Defender? We all know you have that one framed in Richmond.

Yeah i also have a butt load of best throwers, smartest moves, and some other dumb topics people have come up with over the years. All of these categories were cheapened by the fact that 20 other people got awards that night. If you just want to give out a bunch of funny papers that's fine, but if you want the awards to be an accomplishment cut the dead weight.

MVP-this covers everything. Sometimes the best thrower will win, sometimes the best defender, and sometimes best receiver. It just depends on who dominates in the tournament.

Best New Player/Rookie- nice to encourage the new kids on the block

Hardest to Guard-the same as best receiver so redundant. I would cut both but one should be abolished for sure.

Best Defender-have to play good D to be MVP
Best Thrower-have to throw well to be MVP
Best Receiver-have to catch well to be MVP

Most Spirited Player-we have the Dan Gabor Memorial Award that goes out to one person a year and actually means a great deal to the community and the sole receiver of the honor.

Most Spirited Team-encourages fair team play and good sportsmanship

Sexiest Butt-a joke. Remember the Rosie campaign for this. "Please vote me for sexiest butt."

Cutest Dog-dogs shouldn't be encouraged to be at league. this is a people sport and the dogs run the fields now.

last year the ec decided on those categories and to make them a staple for all leagues....

if you all want to bitch or change the awards, join the EC and do so. league's primary purpose isn't meant to appease club level players and their award standards. giving out 4 specialized category of awards (and there is a difference between hardest to guard and best receiver - though i thought i left out one of these categories for summer league after everyone cried about it last year and will agree it could be similar), plus mvp, rookie, spirit (not all league players are involved in Gabor), and a couple fun ones is very appropriate for FDA leagues

it didn't take long to hand out the awards, just tally them, which can be fixed

would you value your fda awards any more if less had been awarded? i doubt it. however, i proudly display my "most likely to play hungover" on my fridge

You don't have to be involved in the Dan Gabor "tournament' to receive the Dan Gabor Memorial Spirit Award. I never ran the Gabor tournament.

I think it's just ajax. I bet most people (keeping in mind the point of winter/summer league) don't care too much and like having more.

name one person who ever received a WL or SL spirit award who has not played in or even knew about the Dan Gabor tournament.

I think the volume of awards is dumb.

I agree with ajax enough to post this but not enough to argue over it... People waste plenty of time doing stupid things, if someone wants to count votes for an hour while they drink their beer then so be it.

i usually just write my name down for everything anyways!
