This is particularly aimed to people that like to mess with gadgets. I have an Asus EeePc that I bought for $300 1 year ago, but is about 2 years old. It is a 4 gig netbook or mini-notebook with Linux OS. It's friggin awesome for someone that is willing to suffer major conveniences (dvd, cd, screen size, keyboard size) for portability. One of the inconveniences that you would have with this one is not being able to see anything on the screen, as I ran over it, with my car. The rest of the hardware is sound and resilient to suv tires.

There are many possibilities for this laptop, again if you're into customization and gadgets, or interested in getting interested in customization and gadgets:

There are much better options right now for cheap portable laptops (right now I own my favorite piece of hardware ever, the MSI Wind Netbook) but this computer is ideal for experimentation. I would be happy to make a good deal with you if you are interested- in a broken computer.

There should be a store that sells only things that have been run over by a car.

I recommend staying away from any that have recently been run over by automobiles.

I hope you're not having to send it from Argentina. I looked into sending my Ipod in for a warranty and it was going to cost about $75 to ship it one way from Mendoza.

My Eee PC has a Celeron Processor, 4G Storage, 512MB main memory and a Camera:
http://event.asus.com/eeepc/comparison/eeepc_comparison.htm

It would be shipped from Alabama.

This is what one person sold his parts for last year with a broken motherboard:
http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=21501
My motherboard seems to be in much better shape. It is 3 years old now so I wouldn't expect even close to this much. But I think I could sell the components (battery, keyboard, touchpad, motherboard) for at least $50.

if by "live up to the hype" you mean, is better but less mainstream/marketed then i guess you are right?

the article mentions googles new os they are coming out with for netbooks, then they will partner with manufacturing companies to produce the netbook with the available google os.

regardless, netbooks are pretty useless for most people when you can get a fully functional laptop for not much more or a much more compact iphone/ipod touch.
